2007 has been a busy year and we have been impressed over the years with the interest shown by the Medical Students who have undertaken research projects there. In 2007 Mr & Mrs Spence, retired teachers from North Wales conducted a study of the activities of the Centre, and were full of praise for the staff, and made a number of recommendations including the need for new equipment and lessons in English for the teachers, which would benefit the children. In another project, we were impressed when art students made use of art therapy to help villagers suffering from emotional and mental health problems. In another project, medical students assessed the hygiene beliefs and practices of the villages, and has identified a number of simple methods to complement current practices and further improve the rural community’s health.
Again, medical students undertook an Ear and Hearing Screening programme, in the summer of 2007. This resulted in recommendations for teaching basic prevention of ear disease.

Weekly curative and preventative clinics continue at the villages of Irumaram, Adavapakkam and Kavampire, together with health education visits to schools and villages. Our Health Education Group have identified more projects to improve medical aid such as a well woman clinic, and we would dearly love to establish a small outpatient clinic. Dr Viswanathan has been able to initiate a much needed suicide prevention programme.
Turning to the Child Development Centre, this is staffed by highly qualified teachers and assistants, and it continues to be a model centre for the region, where children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 are prepared for formal school using play techniques, and receive daily nutritious meals such as vegetable rice plus nutrition supplements. The children’s height and weight is monitored and malnourished children are identified and given additional protein, and an extensive health education programme is also organised for the parents.
